Crazy ways Evernote makes my life better
Evernote has been on the scene for a couple of years now, and I've been using it almost as long as it's been around.
Evernote is the perfect place to keep important tidbits of information synced across many devices and, as a result, at your immediate disposal.
I have Evernote installed on my home computer, work laptop, iPad, and two iPhones.
I'd like to talk about a couple of cool ways Evernote has helped me. They might be kind of off-the-wall, but I hope you'll use them as a springboard to your own cool ideas.
1. Shopping Assistant
We buy vacuum bags maybe twice a year. (No snide comments about lack of cleanliness, OK?) Our vacuum requires very specific bags. More than once I guessed at the bag required, only to find out I'd grabbed the wrong one and had to return to the store.
Never again. I took this quick snapshot with my phone, added it to Evernote, tagged it vacuum bag - and have it at my fingertips every time I need to replenish.
2. Painting assistant
You know how it goes: go to buy some custom-mixed paint, and use every last drop of it painting a room. "Perfect planning!", you think to yourself.
Inevitably, though, you'll end up with some ding in the wall that requires a bit of touch-up. Now, if you could only remember the exact name of that paint you had mixed...
As soon as we have paint mixed, I take a quick shot of the can lid with my phone and post it to evernote. Tagged: paint, living room, home depot
Next time we need that exact color, I smugly stroll into Home Depot, show them the photo, and away we go.
3. Travel assistant
When I went to China a few months back, I was advised to keep a copy of my passport and visa in my suitcase in case either got lost. I did so, but also snapped photos of them with my phone and added them to Evernote, tagged with china, visa, passport, travel. A picture is worth a thousand words, right?
I also ALWAYS copy itineraries, boarding passes, and other flight information into Evernote...just in case.
4. Maintenance assistant
I buy oil for my mower as often as I buy vacuum bags. So, I don't always remember what the manufacturer recommends for oil, or how much it needs.
A quick snapshot of that section in the owners manual, added to Evernote and tagged: mower, oil sure comes in handy. (Adding a PDF of the owner's manual, often found on manufacturer's websites, is also a great idea.)
5. Serial number keeper
If you're like me, you're too excited to set up that new HDTV or X-Box to write down the serial number and model number in the manual like you're supposed to.
Well, with a little discipline on my part, I've gotten into the habit of taking a quick snapshot of this important information and adding it to evernote. Tags: tv, serial number, model number, samsung
Next time I need that information, I can quickly search for it in Evernote without having to dig out the owner's manual. To be honest, I'm not even sure where it is.
6. Motorcycle buddy
OK, this might be the weirdest use for Evernote I have. I like to do my motorcycle maintenance myself. So I bought a lift to help me elevate the bike while I change the oil.
The problem is, there's only one certain spot under the cycle where I can place the lift and hoist it while keeping it perfectly balanced. Even an inch in the wrong direction and the bike will want to lean either forward or backward.
So, I found the perfect sweet spot and, again, pulled out my phone. The photo might not mean much to you, but to me, it saves a LOT of time and frustration.
Every time I need to change the oil, I open Evernote, and search for the motorcycle tag:
So, what fun, crazy, interesting, or useful ways are YOU using Evernote?
